Let me tell you a story about a time when Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma had a fight and how Lord Shiva solved their differences.
Once, Vishnu was lying down in his serpent bed taking a nap and at that time Brahma arrived there. When he noticed that even after his arrival Lord Vishnu did not wake up, he got angry.
Brahma said: "How can you sleep without greeting me, even after my arrival?".
Though Lord Vishnu was angry on the inside he calmly spoke to Brahma: "Greetings my son, please take a seat and why do you look angry?"
Then Brahma said: "Due to the influence of time you have become proud though I am your grandfather!".
To this Vishnu replied: "This whole universe is situated within me and you are thinking like a thief! You are born of a lotus sprung from my navel, hence your words are futile!"
The both of them started arguing as to who was greater and a huge battle ensued between them. The other Gods of the Heaven who witnessed this battle were worried and hence approached Lord Shiva.
Lord Shiva then said: "I am already aware of the fight between Vishnu and Brahma. Let me go there and look at it myself and stop this battle."
Once, Lord Shiva arrived at the battlefield, he disappeared and then reappeared as a column of fire between Vishnu and Brahma. When they saw this column of fire they wanted to find out the top and the bottom of this column. So, they both agreed that whoever reaches either the top or the bottom first is the greater person.
Then Vishnu assumed the form of a boar and started downwards and Brahma assumed the form of a swan and proceeded upwards. Vishnu could not find the end of the column of fire and returned back to the battlefield, dejected.
But, when Brahma went upwards to find out the beginning of the column, he came across a Ketaki flower and asked: "How far is the top from here?"
To this the Ketaki flower said: "When Lord Shiva heard that there was a battle between you two, he laughed and I fell from his head and I myself have been travelling for a very long time and it would take you a really long time to reach the top".
Brahma thought that it would be difficult for him to prove that he was greater if he did not reach the top. So, he told the Ketaki flower :"Once we reach the battleground, can you please tell Vishnu that I had reached the top and will you be my witness?". The Ketaki flower agreed.
As soon as they reached the battleground, they saw Vishnu who was exhausted and Brahma beaming with joy told him: "I have reached the top of the fire column and this Ketaki flower is my witness!" and the Ketaki flower agreed.
Vishnu believed this to be true and worshiped Brahma. At that time, Lord Shiva appeared in his original form and told what had happened and blessed Vishnu that he would be worshiped by people in temples and that he would have many festivals.
Then Shiva created a being called Bhairava from between his eyebrows and instructed it cut the fifth head of Brahma so that he loses his ego.
Then Bhairava obediently cut the fifth head of Brahma. Then Vishnu who witnessed, this started shedding tears and told Lord Shiva that Lord Shiva himself had given five heads to Brahma as a special symbol and to spare him as this was his first guilt.
Lord Shiva agreed and told that since Brahma had spoken a lie, he would not have any temples and people would not worship him.
Brahma agreed to this and said that:"O Lord, I consider this sparing me itself as a great blessing and and I pray to you."
Then Lord Shiva turned towards the Ketaki flower and said: "Since you too have uttered a lie, you will never be used when people worship me." The flower agreed to this and worshiped the Lord.
The first lesson that we need to learn from this story is that:"Nobody is greater in this world except the Lord himself. Everyone is equal. So, don't get yourselves into unnecessary quarrels as to who is greater!"
The second lesson that we need to learn is that: " A Lie may help you achieve things for awhile, but it is only short-lived. So, always be truthful if you want to be successful!"
